Gavagan Art at Linton Court Gallery

From 13th November to 19th December 2010

The geology of these three northern counties which has dramatically shaped the landscape, has also greatly influenced the art produced by artists who live and work there.

The Linton Court Gallery’s winter exhibition features work by a number of artists from each county, some established as landscape artists, others who are lesser known.

Linton Court is in Settle, situated beneath the limestone outcrop of Castleberg Crag, close to the magnificent and distinctive landscape of Malham, an area which has inspired artists for hundreds of years.

The area continues to inspire contemporary artists living in the area and work featured in the exhibition include: David Cook, Katharine Holmes, Pip Seymour, Jill Colquhoun, Rebecca Wallace Jones and Philippa Troutman. Also on display will be a selection of watercolours by the late Norman Adams RA and a display of watercolours by Glyn Hughes.

The Shanties

"I live in a railway house on the site of one of the former Shanty towns of Ribblehead.

I read, some years ago, that there were no known photographs of the thousands of people who lived here, at Ribblehead, when the Settle Carlisle railway was under construction in the 1870s.

I drew and painted the landscape. I walked the landscape. The massive presence of the railway and the absence of the people and their homes became my main visual concern.

This exhibition is drawn from living here, walking the landscape, researching from texts from the 1870's and contemporary historical and archeological articles and books.

I am a printmaker and have created etchings, screenprints, drypoints, drawings and paintings concerned with the lives of the Shanty dwellers. Each image is accompanied by text.

I hope the work will contribute to this remarkable place."

'The Shanties" was a touring show. It was launched at The Folly in Settle and supported by the Arts Council and Arts Connection.

Since then, the Shanties Exhibition has toured several art galleries in the North West.

Esther Primrose produced handmade, beautifully crafted books and boxes for the exhibition. These formed part of the touring exhibition and housed dry point plates, sets of prints, and etchings.

Media reports of the Shanties Exhibition can be found in the MEDIA section and images from the Shanties series can be found in the Gallery.

just make a cross

Even now my fingers
betray the mark,

slipshod cross-nails, splinter
that the blacksmith

knocked from his anvil,
a barbed wire signature,

my name unspelled
sagging beneath my man's

a word of no account
when we were doing

the right thing getting wed
out on Blea Moor
